Entering Wrocław by bike

Hello traveller!

One of the most problematic part of most long-distance bicycle journeys is the way from outskirts to the centre of a (big) city. Here you find a concise description of different routes leading from suburbs to the heart of Wrocław. In most cases you can use them also to get out from the city - then you should read it backwards :-)

The map reffering to the description below (click to enlarge)

THE NORTH

I. Coming from the North (from Trzebnica direction)

Entering Wrocław from this direction you may pass villages such as: Psary, Krzyżanowice or Ramieszów – depending on your route.

1. If entering through Krzyżanowice, just follow the main road ( National Road no.5) going south. At the border of Wroclaw you cross a small river called Widawa. After first traffic lights you can take a fairly visible cycle track – it’s on the right side of the road, going along Żmigrodzka street. After app.2 km you reach an intersection with tramlines; turn right here, into Bałtycka street >>> [A].

2. Coming via Psary, at the border of Wroclaw you cross a small river called Widawa. Then just follow the main road (Kamieńskiego street) straight ahead for app. 4 km. When you reach a bigger junction with tramlines – turn right into Bałtycka street. At the next traffic lights continue straight on.

[A]
Soon you reach a river (in fact these are two parallel canals, not a river). Cross the canals (through the Osobowicki bridge). App. 1 km farther you cross railway tracks over the bridge above. Cycling along the main road (with tram tracks) you pass a park on your left-hand side. Continue along the main road (Pomorska street), and after half kilometre you reach a large intersection with traffic lights. Turn left and at next intersection turn right - shortly you are at the Odra river bank. Going over two bridges you enter the Old City (center).

3. Coming via Ramieszów, follow the R9 signs – it's EuroVelo 9 cycle route (Amber Route) crossing Wrocław near the city centre. At the border of Wrocław you find an information board (on the left side). In case some signs are missing, here's a brief description of the route to the center.
Follow the main road, taking the first left turn after crossing railway tracks. After leaving the housing estate, go ahead. At the next crossroads turn right, into Bora-Komorowskiego street.

[B]
Here you encounter a bicycle path on the right side of the street.
Following the main street (Bora-Komorowskiego) soon you reach a flyover  - railway tracks and a motorway (route no.8) are under. Go over - DO NOT turn right ON the viaduct - and turn right at the end of the viaduct.

[C]
Here is the centre of the district (Psie Pole) - a small market place with bus stops. You may cross it, just follow the main street, or you can follow the Eurovelo 9 signs - the you bypass this market place.

[D]
Soon you reach the freeway (National Road no.8). The two-way cycle track is only on the left side of the road. First you cross a small river called Widawa, then go under two viaducts and go by Orlen gas station on your left-hand side.
Here you also see “Korona” shopping centre on your right-hand side.
App. 1 km farther you approach Shell gas station on your left. Turn left and continue your journey along the Brucknera street.
At the traffic lights, change the side of the road but keep riding in the same direction. Shortly you find two canals – go over, and turn right onto the path on the embankment.

Alternatively, you can go straight, following the main road - Kochanowskiego street. It is shorter, however, quite busy route.

Follow it for app. 2 km, till you reach another bridge. Cross the river and go down a wide avenue (little to the left, passing high buildings on your right). This is Grunwaldzki square (in fact it's a former runaway built during the Second World War). Go down this avenue, pass the main junction and soon you reach another bridge – Grunwaldzki bridge.

[E]
After crossing the Grunwaldzki bridge (on the east, left side) go down to the underground passage, with a painted cycle path. After passing TWO tunnels you reach the opposite side of the (Społeczny) square. In front of you there is a park. Cross a street and go ahead at the edge of the park – towards river.
After app. 200 m you reach an intersection – here you must turn left – into Purkyniego street. On your right-hand side there is a National Museum (red brick building), on your left-hand side, at the entrance to the park you find another information board. Keep going straight ahead, and after second traffic lights you enter the Old City (center).

II. Coming from the North (from Oborniki Śląskie direction)

You enter city through Szewce village. At the border of Wroclaw you cross a small river called Widawa. Keep riding on the main Regional Road no. 342 (goes parallel to the railway tracks). After app. 9 km you pass Shell gas station on your right. At the intersection with traffic lights turn right >>> [A].

THE EAST

III. Coming from the East (from Oleśnica direction)

Entering Wrocław from this direction you may travel either through Domaszczyn or Kiełczów. You can also travel through Wilczyce village – depending on your route. Anyway, sooner or later you have to cross a small river called Widawa.

1. Coming via Domaszczyn, follow the main road (Okulickiego street, for app. 3 km from the border) till you reach an intersection with old railway tracks. Go straight on >>> [B].

2. Coming via Kiełczów, follow the main road and app. 2,5 km after crossing the city border you reach an intersection with a flyover in front of you). Turn left here (into Krzywoustego street) >>> [C].

3. Coming via Wilczyce (ver. 1), turn left at Wilczyce's main intersection and cross the Widawa river after few hundred of meters. After the second bridge turn right - app. 2 km from here you reach city border and later an Y-intersection with a major road. Turn right here >>>[F].

4. Coming via Wilczyce (ver. 2). There is also another option (longer) to get to the center of Wrocław from Wilczyce (via Psie Pole) – keep riding the main road in the western direction. App. 2 km after crossing the city border you reach a junction near a small market place. Turn left here, into Krzywoustego street, cross the market place and follow the main road >>> [D].

[F]
Go over the bridge and after around 1 km later you cross railway tracks. Keep following the main street (Swojczycka street) till you get to a bridge going over two channels.
After crossing the bridge keep following the main road - Mickiewicza street, as it bends to the right. Continue the main road for the next 3,5 km. It is a busy street, so you may also use sidewalk on the left, which in some section is combined with a cycle path. The Mickiewicza street goes partly through a park. At the end you reach an old, yellow bridge. After the bridge take the first left turn (into Wyspiańskiego street). Follow a bicycle path along channel for app. 1,5 km till you reach next bridge – the Grunwaldzki bridge >>> [E].

IV. Coming from the East (from Jelcz-Laskowice direction)

Coming from this direction, either through Kamieniec Wrocławski (road no. 455), or through Dobrzykowice, you enter Wrocław via Strachcińska street. Keep riding the main road and around 3 km later you cross railway tracks and a bridge  >>> [F].

V. Coming from the East (from Oława direction)

Coming from this direction you can enter Wrocław either via Tresno or via Radwanice. There is also (little) chance that you enter via Zachrzowice (near Św. Katarzyna).

1. If you travel from Oława, I recommend taking Odra Cycling Route (blue signs) going through Siedlce, Zakrzów and Kotowice. From Kotowice to Siechnice the route goes through a forest. Taking this way, turn right after leaving the forest (before a bridge). Then pass Blizanowice and Tresno. Here is the border of Wrocław. Continue the main street going parallel to the river for app. 8 km (Opatowicka, Międzyrzecka and Na Grobli streets). Do not turn left. After crossing a bridge (over Oława river), you enter an open space with intersections – Wróblewskiego square – keep going straight ahead.

[G]
When arriving at a square with a tunnel (Dominikanski square), you enter the Old City (center).

2. You may also come from Oława using the main, busy road (no. 456). In this case you enter Wrocław via Radwanice. Simply follow the main road (Opolska, Krakowska and Traugutta streets) for app. 6 km – keep riding along the tram line. At an intersection with another tram lines (Wróblewskiego square) keep riding straight on >>> [G].

3. In case you enter Wrocław via Zachrzyce (near Św.Katarzyna), keep going the main road (Mościckiego street). First you cycle under a railway viaduct, then go little uphill - at a T-junction turn right and go over railway lines. When arriving at main street with a tram line, take the left turn (into Krakowska street). Keep riding along this tram tracks for app. 3 km. At an intersection with another tram lines keep riding straight on >>> [G].

THE SOUTH

VI. Coming from the South  (from Żórawina direction)

There are several options to enter Wrocław from this direction. Most direct (and busy) route is road no. 395 (from Strzelin) – in this case you get to Wrocław through Żerniki Wrocławskie. Another option is that you come through Wysoka.

1. Coming via Żerniki Wrocławskie follow the main road (Buforowa street). After passing railway viaduct keep riding straight on. At BP gas station (right) you reach a large juction with traffic lights. Here you just go ahead. Around 200 m further you reach an intersection with two traffic lights, one after another. Turn right at the SECOND traffic lights (just as the bike path goes) into Hubska street.

After app. 1 km you reach traffic lights near a passage under railway tracks. Go straight here (DO NOT go under viaduct). Soon you pass railway central station (on your right) and bus central station (on your left). Turn right at traffic lights, into a street with tram tracks.

[H]
Go under the viaduct (it's dark and narrow - watch out!). At the next traffic lights go stright on, into Kołłątaja street. Go down this street. At the third traffic lights you reach Dominikanski square – take the left turn, the city centre begins here.

[i]
2. Coming via Wysoka follow the main road (Kutrzeby street). At an intersection with a major street near a church, go straight on into Parafialna street. When you reach another intersection with a major street, take the left turn (into Grota-Roweckiego street). Go under railway viaduct and keep riding straight on for the next 3 km (no turns on passing intersections), till you reach central bus station (on your right, just after the end of cycle path). Here you  reach railway viaduct  >>> [H].

VII. Coming from the South (from Kobierzyce direction)

If you travel by National Road no. 8 (from Kłodzko direction) or no. 35 (from Świdnica direction) you enter Bielany Wrocławskie before Wrocław – here you have to cross a highway (A4) running between Bielany and Wrocław. There are basically three ways to get to Wrocław from Bielany:

  1. via the main street (Karkonoska),
  2. via shopping centre (Czekoladowa street),
  3. or via Ślęza and Wysoka villages.

1. Coming via Karkonoska street (main entrance from the A4 motorway) beware - this is a VERY VERY VERY busy street, but also the fastest. If you dare to take it, the way to the centre is very simple (but also might be dangerous). After entering the city take the left turn at the second traffic lights (in front of two tanks standing on plinths, a Soviet soldiers graveyard) - and from this point keep riding all the time straight on. After some 5,5 km you reach the city center. When going under railway tracks, you have the main railway station 500 m to the right, and the city centre is 1 km straight on.

2. Coming via Czekoladowa street (connecting Wrocław and a shopping centre in Bielany Wroclawskie) – if you come from Świdnica direction (route no. 35), you pass Obi, Ikea and Tesco markets on your left. Turn left (traffic lights) into a street between Tesco and Makro, which leads to a passage under highway.

If you come from Kłodzko direction (National Road no. 8), you have to reach the shopping centre, which is on your left side, just before the highway. It’s quite problematic to describe the best way from Bielany to Czekoladowa street – ‘coz there is none. In fact you have to use very busy roads or pavements.
When leaving Bielany village turn left, direction Makro shopping mall (just on the other side of the junction). When passing Makro turn right at the traffic lights, into a street going under highway (you may also use Makro inner way). At a roundabout take the second right turn, into Czekoladowa street. At the end of this street you reach an intersection near a church - take the right turn, into Wałbrzyska street, and then second left – you cross a bridge over small river called Ślęza.

[J]
Take the first left turn into Krzycka street. Around 2 kms further you should cycle under railway viaduct and reach a major street (Karkonoska). Turn left at the traffic lights. From here keep riding straight on all the time. Around 4 kms later you reach the city center. When going under railway tracks, the main railway station is 500 m to the right, city centre – 1 km straight on.

3. Coming via Ślęza and Wysoka – travelling from Kłodzko direction (National Road no. 8) turn right at the first traffic lights in Bielany Wrocławskie village. Going down this road you reach Ślęza village and cross a small river of the same name – Ślęza. Following the main road you cycle above the highway and enter Wysoka village. Take the first right turn here – into Chabrowa street. At the end turn left into Kutrzeby street – here you enter Wrocław >>> [i].

Note: if you come from Świdnica direction, it is no use to go via Ślęza and Wysoka.

VIII. Coming from the South (from Kąty Wrocławskie direction)

There are several options to enter Wrocław from this direction. I recommend signposted EuroVelo 9 route (“R9” signs) that leads towards the city through Krzeptów and Smolec. However, you may also go up north along the Bystrzyca river and enter Wrocław through Samotwór village, or use the shortest (but also the busiest) road no. 347 - entering city through Mokronos Dolny. You may also enter Wrocław through Zabrodzie.

1. EuroVelo 9 goes from Kąty Wrocławskie through Sadowice, Małkowice, Kębłowice, Krzeptów and Smolec. After leaving Krzeptów the route goes along an airport fence. At a T-junction turn left and cross the city border. At the end of the street turn left, and follow the main road - soon you reach a roundabout near church. Go straight on and take the first right turn (into Zagony street). At the end of the road turn right and then left – into main (Krzemieniecka) street. After crossing railway tracks and a bridge over Ślęza river, turn right into Ostrowskiego street. Soon you reach a busy intersection with tram tracks and BP petrol station. Turn left here (a poor cycle path runs on the left side of the main road).

[K]
Passing the junction with BP petrol station at the corner get the Grabiszyńska street (heading to the North). Go down this street for app. 3 km till you reach a busy intersection with tram tracks. From this point the main railway station is 1,3 km to the right, city centre is 600 m away straight on. Reaching a city center ring (Kazimierza Wielkiego street at second traffic lights) turn left here - Old Town in in front of you.

2. Coming via Mokronos Dolny, follow the main road (Mokronoska, later Wiejska street). After entering Wrocław turn left at an intersection with traffic lights - into Solskiego street. After crossing a bridge (over Ślęza river), a tram tracks start on your right. Keep going till a busy intersection with BP petrol station on your right. Go straight here >>> [K].

3. Coming via Samotwór village, after entering Wrocław turn right at the end of the road, into Jarnołtowska street.

[L]
Follow the main road (later named Jerzmanowska and Żernicka street) for app. 8 km. Meanwhile you cross a bridge over Ślęza river, then pass railway tracks above you.
At the end of the street turn left on a viaduct over rails. Go down the street, cross another railway tracks and turn right (into Bystrzycka street). At the traffic lights take the left turn (into Na Ostatnim Groszu street). At the second traffic lights turn right into Legnicka street.

[M]
From this point there's app. 4 km straight way to the city centre.

Remark: using the cycle path on the left side of Legnicka street you come across a bottleneck - app. 90 cm wide passage under a railway viaduct. Taking the sidewalk on the right side of Legnicka street, you enter an underground passage with a steep and narrow way (at Strzegomski square).

When passing a pedestrian bridge over the Legnicka street, you enter Jana Pawła II square - keep moving all the time straight ahead – the Old City (center) begins after second traffic lights.

4. Coming via Zabrodzie, go across an intersection with a major road at the border of Wrocław. At the end of the Zabrdzka street you reach an intersection near a church - take the SECOND right turn, into Wałbrzyska street, and then second left – you cross a bridge over small river called Ślęza >>> [J].

THE WEST

IX. Coming from the West (from Środa Śląska direction)

There are several possibilities to enter Wrocław from the west direction. To get to the city from Środa Śląska direction you may enter through Wróblowice, Gałów or Lutynia.

1. Coming via Wróblewice (on National Road no. 94) cross railway tracks and at traffic lights keep going straight on >>> [O].

2. Coming via Lutynia – at the main intersection in the village take the Kościuszki street (eastern direction). After crossing city border you reach a busy road (National Road no. 94). Turn right here, cross railway tracks and at traffic lights keep going straight on >>> [O].

3. Coming via Gałów – at the main intersection in the village turn (left) into Wrocławska street. At the city border sign turn right into a field road, cross over Bystrzyca river and go straight ahead the Jarnołtowska street >>> [L].

X. Coming from the West (from Brzeg Dolny direction)

Coming from Brzeg Dolny direction you may enter city through Wilkszyn or Brzezina. It is also likely that you cycle on the embankment - travel along the Odra river.

1. If you enter Wrocław via Wilkszyn follow the main road till you reach a bridge (over Bystrzyca river). Go over and at next intersection keep moving straight on (Główna street). After crossing railway tracks take the first right turn.

[N]
From this point on keep riding the main road (Królewiecka, later Pilczycka street) for app. 5,5 km. Meanwhile you pass a newly built stadium, cross bridge over Ślęza river and pass a park. When you reach first traffic lights, turn right (into Milenijna street) and at the next traffic lights (BP gas station on your left), turn left into Legnicka street >>> [M].

2. Entering via Brzezina; follow the main road till you reach traffic lights. Turn left here - this street (National Road no. 94) is named Średzka, later Kosmonautów, Lotnicza and Legnicka.

[O]
Here (in Leśnica district) you come across a tram line - keep riding along the tracks. Moving in the eastern direction you reach city centre after app. 11 km ride. Meanwhile, at around 6th km, you reach an intersection with BP gas station on your left. Go straight on here >>> [M].

3. Travelling along the Odra river banks leave the embankment path in Janówek – just before water treatment plant (the path along Odra finishes at the mouth of Bystrzyca - Odra's tributary river). Go down the Janowska street for app. 3 km, passing water treatment plant on your left and crossing bridge over Bystrzyca river. At the end of the street turn left, into Brodzka street. Follow the main road for next 2 km, till you reach junction with a major road – cross it straight >>> [N].
